Apple is putting together a major new version of iOS, iOS 6.0, which is expected to ship this October if not sooner — and on iOS 6, the mapping application will be powered not by Google’s maps

Apple doesn’t announce things months in advance and is more secretive than MI5 – so inevitably, the slightest bit of speculation soon becomes reported around the world. This month’s speculation is that Apple is working on a smaller iPad with a 7.85-inch screen.

Apple announced two important things last week: PC Free, which means that from the Autumn iOS devices no longer need to be connected to Macs or PCs for activation or synchronisation, and iCloud, a new cloud computing service.
