Is the BlackBerry PlayBook a flop?

It's been a bad week for BlackBerry fans: rumours are swirling about the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, and none of them are good. What Techeye.net describes as "bad reviews and an advertising campaign which is centred around its ability to play Flash" has "made certain [that] RIM's much-hyped flagship tablet has floundered" - and Boy Genius Report says that things are so bad the firm is preparing to pull Wi-Fi PlayBooks from the shelves. Given that the Wi-Fi model is the only model RIM currently offers, that's very serious indeed.

BGR's report was based on a note by analyst Mike Abramsky, who says that a "pullback in production" would be designed to align inventory with sell-through, which is a fancy way of saying that RIM is making considerably more PlayBooks than it's been able to sell so far.

RIM says that the story is rubbish, describing it as "pure fiction" and saying that the firm has "no plans to discontinue" - but there's no doubt that the PlayBook hasn't done as well as hoped. RIM may have shipped half a million PlayBooks in its first financial quarter, but that doesn't mean it sold them. With sites such as Techeye.net reporting that "unoptimised Windows 7 tablets are performing better than RIM's PlayBook" and O2 deciding not to stock the device due to "some issues with the end to end customer experience", selling PlayBooks isn't going to get any easier any time soon. RIM's marketing manager certainly seems to think so: he's just announced that he's leaving the firm and joining Samsung instead.
